Niagara IceDogsThe Niagara IceDogs are at it again with another busy season! For those of you that don’t know, the Niagara IceDogs are a major junior ice hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League based in St.Catharines, which neighbours Niagara Falls.
The franchise was originally known as the Mississauga IceDogs, founded in 1998. The team was relocated to St. Catharines and played its inaugural season in the Niagara region during the 2007-2008 OHL season after spending 9 seasons in Mississauga.
History of the Niagara IceDogs
The Niagara IceDogs was founded in 1998 and was originally known as the Mississauga Ice Dogs. The first three seasons they struggled, but soon they began to turn things around. In 2006, Eugene Melnyk who owned the Toronto St.Michael’s Majors bought the team, and after the 2006-2007 season he sold the Mississauga IceDogs. The team then approached the City of St.Catharines to move the team there and on June 5, 2007 the OHL Board of Governors approved a deal with the City of St.Catharines on a leasing arrangement at the Jack Gatecliff Arena (Gatorade Garden City Complex). They are currently owned by Bill and Denise Burke.
