Plan a Getaway with your BFF to Niagara Falls this Spring

Reading Time:  5 minutes -

When most people think of a trip to the Niagara Falls, they think of a family vacation or a romantic trip with their partner. However, it’s also an exciting getaway option for a girls weekend — and if you are coming from Toronto it’s easily accessible via GO Transit (see schedule). Forget about the hassle of traffic and gas expenses; here are some ways to plan a getaway with your BFF to Niagara Falls this Spring.

First Day of Spring is March 20th, 2024

FIRST STOP, CLIFTON HILL

Girls just wanna have fun! And Clifton Hill is the touristy spot in Niagara Falls that offers just that. There is everything from arcades, haunted houses, Canada’s largest observation wheel (the Niagara SkyWheel), casual laid-back dining from Kelsey’s Original Roadhouse featuring one of Niagara’s largest outdoor patio bars, to a unique Boston Pizza which also offers bowling, as well as an abundance of arcade games inside. Did we mention that you don’t need to use your data? Clifton Hill has FREE WiFi, so be sure to take advantage of that on your visit and snap away with your bestie!

You can rest assured that no matter what kind of weather that Mother Nature conjures up, Clifton Hill will be a guaranteed stop to get in some games in the Great Canadian Midway for your competitive streak, miniature golfing, and one-of-a-kind views inside the climate-controlled gondolas that the SkyWheel offers. We recommend the Clifton Hill Fun Pass, which for a low cost of $39.95+HST, you will each gain access to six thrilling attractions!

SECOND STOP, ADVENTURE!

After checking out all that Clifton Hill has to offer, it’s time to be one of the first to get wet this season! At the bottom of the “Street of Fun” is the Niagara City Cruises which is normally open for the Spring-time launching boats at the End of the month on March 28th, 2024 (Weather Dependent). Get up close and personal (and a little wet too) aboard this scenic ride which allows their guests day-time trips for a “full mist experience” and evening trips for a “light mist experience”.

Next to the Niagara City Cruises is another must-stop for adventure — WildPlay’s MistRider Zipline to the Falls. If you and your BFF are all about a sense of adventure and you don’t mind heights, than this one is for you! Side-by-side, you will take off like a bird in the sky with views of the Horseshoe and American Falls. Take off from the 220 feet high vantage point for 2200 feet to the gorge below. Don’t worry, you are fully harnessed and completely safe!

Niagara Falls Eclipse: Get ready for an incredible celestial show! The total solar eclipse is a mesmerizing event that will capture the imaginations of you and your best friend. It’s a rare chance to see the moon entirely cover the sun, creating a breathtaking moment of darkness and revealing a peek of the sun’s corona.

THIRD STOP, RELAX AND REJUVENATE

Now it’s time for some pampering! So many options to check out, like drying yourself off by trying out an infrared sauna at the Healing Salt Cave (located on Thorold Stone Rd.). This treatment makes you sweat in order to regulate your body temperature, ensuring detoxification within your body.

If a spa treatment is an absolute MUST on your getaway with your BFF to Niagara Falls and you plan on staying the night, than you may want to choose a hotel for an overnight stay that features accommodations that will enhance the relaxation and rejuvenation (see: 8 hotels in Niagara Falls with a spa)

Be on the lookout for hotels that offer packages catering to a girl’s getaway, such as the “Girls Just Wanna…” Package by White Oaks Resort, the “Taste of Niagara Wine Country” by the Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa, or overnight accommodations in the classy little town of Niagara-on-the-Lake at the Pillar and Post.

FOURTH STOP, GIRL’S NIGHT!

Now it’s time to paint the town red with your sister from another mister! This will require a trip to one of Niagara’s casinos: the Fallsview Casino or Casino Niagara. It doesn’t matter which one you choose because either will give you hours of entertainment. Thousands of slot machines and gaming tables, restaurants and bars are offered by both of these wildly popular stops in Niagara.

Depending on when you book your trip, you can catch a concert at the all new OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino. This Spring for instance, new theatre offers guests a fresh venue for top performances by internationally known names like Breaking Benjamin + Daughtry, Terry Fator, George Thorogood, Lonestar in March and April, to Billy Ray Cyrus, TLC, Diana Ross, Abba Revisited and 54-40 in May. Every month has exciting performances to check out.

A night out with the BFF will probably find you finalizing the evening where you started — on Clifton Hill! At night, the street draws the crowds in with the dazzling neon and flashing lights. The Boston Pizza in particular is a magnet to singles and couples as the music gets louder and the bowling is lit up in black lights until the wee hours.

Whether you choose to spend the night, or head back home Toronto-bound later that day via GO Transit, there is no doubt that you and your BFF will have had an exciting girl’s getaway in Niagara Falls!

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

Being a fantastic host is definitely a skill some people just have, but with a little bit of extra help from us, you can make your next dinner party phenomenal (whether you have the host skills or not). You can still be the host of dinner without having it in your physical space. Choosing the perfect restaurant to suit everyone’s dietary needs and inviting your friends makes you the one in charge. At Clifton Hill, you’ll find Kelsey’s and Boston Pizza, two different but equally fun environments to spend the night. Both have impressive menus with drool-worthy feature items and exciting entertainment like music, sports games viewings and more.

While choosing the right place and booking a table is arguably the most important part, it’s only one aspect of what goes into making dinner out on the town memorable. We’ve put together an expertly crafted list of fool-proof conversation starters and games to spark lively chats and get the group to really bond.

1: Introductions

Once all of your guests have arrived and the menus are scattered across the table, it’s time to break the ice by making sure everyone has had an introduction to the other members of the night. Encourage your friends to introduce themselves with their name and something that they want everyone to know about them. For some that might be what they do for a living, that they have 3 dogs, what they are studying in school, or even what their favorite film is. Let everyone choose for themselves what they’d like to share, hearing what they choose says a lot about their personality!

2: Starters

Keep the conversation relatively light from here while you all look over the menu items. For even faster bonding, encourage the table to order a bunch of starters to share, like cheesy and veggie topped nachos from Kelsey’s or juicy wings or boneless bites from Boston Pizza. Ask everyone to finish this sentence “This one time at band camp….”. It doesn’t actually have to be a story from band camp (seriously, do you even know anyone that went?), but instead, the story should be something ridiculous from when they were a teenager.

3: Two Truths and a Lie

At this point, everyone should have a pretty good sense of who everyone is, regardless of if they’ve just met for the first time tonight. Move on to a staple talking game once apps have been cleared and your main dishes are on the way. The game of the hour? Two truths and a lie. Each person says three-statements, two that are true facts about their lives and one that is a flat out lie. The other guests take turns trying to guess what the lie is, and whoever gets the most right has their dinner paid for by the group (or any other agreed upon prize).

4: Connect

Once your sizzling mains have arrived, it’s time to let the group focused conversation shift naturally into smaller discussions. As the host, you should try to keep a watchful eye on your guests, making sure that no one is left out from a conversation. Weave each smaller talk together by mentioning the relevancy of one person to a talk that someone else is having. If perhaps, someone is talking about an amazing piece of furniture they snagged on Facebook Marketplace and one of your friends is passionate about vintage items, get them in there! If the group needs a bit of help here, ask everyone to talk a little bit about a topic they are passionate about and whoever is the most interested in learning more with naturally start asking questions, leading to a separate conversation.

5: Questions and Answers

With dinner done and the table cleared (with the exception of drinks of course), ask the waiter to bring over as many scraps of paper as they can and enough pens for all of you (you can also prep and bring this to dinner yourself). Start the game by making a list of questions that everyone has to write an answer for anonymously. The questions can be anything from a favorite movie to their most embarrassing date story. Once everyone has written their anonymous answers, each person takes a turn collection the folded paper scraps and reading them out. The goal of the game is to try and guess who said what!

Celebrate Fallsview Casino’s 20th anniversary with a magnificent event featuring Michael Bublé, the adored international superstar!

Renowned Canadian crooner Michael Bublé is set to headline Niagara Fallsview Casino’s 20th-anniversary festivities on June 21, 2024. Returning to Niagara Falls for the special night, Bublé will now perform at the OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino for the first time.

Bublé, who has sold over 75 million records worldwide and received numerous honors, including 5 GRAMMY Awards and 15 JUNO Awards, is poised to make this celebration really exceptional. With six multi-platinum albums and over 14 billion streams worldwide, his commitment to preserving the classics shines through. Bublé’s distinct style, vocal ability, and love of timeless songs have been on display for the past 20 years.

Bublé’s history with Fallsview dates back to 2006 when he performed two sold-out shows at the Avalon Theatre. During the same year, he participated in the charity concert “David Foster & Friends,” held at the Avalon, contributing to raising $3.3 million for families in need of life-saving organ transplants. The star-studded night also featured Andrew Bocelli, Paul Anka, and Babyface.

Hailing from Burnaby, B.C., Bublé stands as one of Canada’s most successful pop crooners. Bublé’s relentless efforts and enthusiasm make every night an exceptional experience, whether it’s standards, pop, swing, jazz, R&B or comedy.

Cathy Price, vice-president of marketing at Niagara Casinos, expressed that having Michael Bublé perform is the perfect way to celebrate Fallsview’s two decades of success.

Fallsview Casino initially opened its doors on June 8, 2004, with a grand VIP night featuring Paul Anka as the first performer at the 1,500-seat Avalon Theatre. Two days later, on June 10, the casino opened to the public, marking the beginning of its 20-year journey.

The OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino opened more recently in 2022, serving as a second concert venue for the casino with a 1,500-seat capacity, expanding the performance and event offerings.

Beyond his musical achievements, Bublé has maintained a prominent presence on Canadian and U.S. television screens for two decades. Notably, he appeared as a guest judge on a special “Dancing with the Stars” episode dedicated to him in 2022 and stars in commercials for Bubly Sparkling Water.

Bublé’s performance is part of a series of events throughout June, commemorating Fallsview Casino’s remarkable 20-year milestone.

Join in the festivities as he sings his heart out, delivering romantic ballads, humorous, and dance-worthy tunes for a memorable night in the Falls. Tickets for Michael Bublé’s concert will be available for purchase starting Friday at 10 a.m. on www.ticketmaster.ca.

The Crazy Evolution Of Mini Golf

Reading Time:  4 minutes -

The recreational activity of Mini Golf has existed for over a hundred years, since 1915. It’s amazing to think how an activity went from something so simple to eventually become the elaborate and intricate putting courses we have today. Here’s a look into the crazy and zany history of mini golf!

Mini golf started off in Scotland in 1867 with the “Ladie’s Putting Club”. While golfers waited to play a round, there was a putting green nearby in which people could practice their swing while they waited. This included many bored women who liked to burn off steam waiting for their fathers and husbands to finish. This distracted many men, so a smaller course titled the ‘Himalayas’ (an 18-hole putting green) was formed near the visitors’ clubhouse for the women to play at. It was simple with no man-made obstacles; just the natural hills of the course to add some complexity to the game.

“Thistle Dhu” Miniature Golf Course 1916

The first golf course recorded in America was in 1916, by a North Carolina man named James Barber.

He hired a designer and landscaper to create a small golf course which he named “Thistle Dhu” (“This Will Do”). Unlike St.Andrew’s Links, it features hazards such as trees, water and sand traps.

A “Tom Thumb” Golf Course (1930)

In 1922, a gentleman named Thomas McCulloch Fairbairn (who was a cotton processing plant owner), noticed that cottonseed hulls would compact and fuse when crushed, so he revolutionized the game when he formuled “artificial green”. Suddenly, playing mini golf became much more entertaining to “regular folk”. Before this time mini golf was a sport for golf fanatics and the wealthy to pass time.

Garnet Carter takes a turn putting the ball.

In 1928, Garnet Carter, a traveling salesman, needed something to entertain his guests at the Fairyland Inn at Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. Carter had a fascination with European folklore (hence the name of the Inn), so he built the first “Tom Thumb” mini golf course after the miniature boy (no bigger than his Dad’s “thumb”). It included gnomes and hollowed-out tree trunks. Carter patented and sold franchise licenses of his Tom Thumb Golf Courses. Soon “Tom Thumb” golf courses were popping up all over the U.S. and Canada.

The game of miniature golf took a hit during the Great Depression, as people couldn’t afford to play. It stayed stagnant until 1938 when the Taylor brothers began to build their own miniature golf courses, but also started adding landscaping, and eye-catching obstacles such as windmills, and castles. By the early 1940’s, Joe and Bob Taylor were in the business of building miniature golf courses and supplying obstacles to companies, and were even sent overseas to entertain soldiers in WWII and Korea.

Fast forward to the miniature golf courses of today, and it has become a favourite family and friends pastime.

Clifton Hill’s Dinosaur Adventure Golf is a prime example of how mini golf evolved over the years. Canada’s largest mini golf features a 50 foot high “active” volcano, 3 ponds, a series of difficult obstacles at each hole. 36 holes of golf make this course unique, where you get to choose one of two 18-hole courses to play.

How to Capture a Solar Eclipse with Your Smartphone: 8 Expert Tips for 2024

Reading Time:  2 minutes -

As the upcoming total solar eclipse approaches North America, many are eager to capture this rare celestial event using their smartphones. With the right techniques, you can produce stunning images and videos of the eclipse with just your smartphone camera. Here’s what you need to know to maximize your chances of success:

1. Turn off Flash: Before totality, disable the flash on your smartphone camera settings. Using flash during the eclipse won’t improve your photos and can disturb others’ viewing experience.

2. Avoid Zooming: Refrain from zooming in on the eclipse using your smartphone’s digital zoom feature. This can decrease image resolution and result in grainy photos. Instead, opt for wide-angle shots or portrait mode to capture the eclipse.

3. Opt for Wide-Angle or Portrait Mode: Consider using super wide-angle or portrait mode to capture impactful images of the eclipsed sun. Positioning the sun close to the horizon can enhance the composition of your photos.

4. Lock Focus: To ensure sharp focus during totality, use the focus lock feature on your smartphone camera. This prevents the camera from hunting for focus and allows you to concentrate on composition.

5. Use Burst Mode: Capture fast-paced moments like the diamond ring phase during totality by using burst mode on your smartphone camera. This ensures you don’t miss the fleeting moments of the eclipse.

6. Shoot in RAW: Take advantage of your smartphone’s RAW image format capability to preserve more image data for later editing. Shooting in RAW allows for better post-processing and enhances dynamic range and detail in your photos.

7. Use a Tripod for Video: If you’re planning to shoot video during the eclipse, use a tripod to keep your smartphone steady. This prevents shaky footage and allows you to capture stable, high-quality videos of the eclipse.

8. Experiment with Composition: Get creative with your smartphone photography by experimenting with different compositions and angles. Include elements like foreground objects or people observing the eclipse to add interest to your photos.

By following these expert tips, you can make the most of your smartphone camera and capture memorable images and videos of the 2024 solar eclipse. Remember to prioritize safety by using proper eye protection when viewing the eclipse directly, and practice with your smartphone camera settings before the big day to ensure success.
