10 Places To Donate (or Help!) This Christmas In Niagara

With Christmas coming and in honor of "International Volunteer Day", here are a handful of places that are looking for Christmas donations this Holiday season, or are in need of assistance. Give a helping hand to individuals and families in need if you can.

Niagara Falls Salvation Army

They provide assistance to those in need with clothing and furniture to singles and families on a priority basis when available. Emergency Food assistance is provided 6 times a year per household.

SANTA ANONYMOUS – Individuals can donate toys at barrels located at various businesses and Fire Stations throughout the city as well as at the Salvation Army on Dorchester.

DONATIONS – Food donations accepted at 5720 Dorchester Rd or Thrift Store at 4420 Drummond Rd. Monetary Donations accepted 5720 Dorchester Rd or Thrift Store.

Kristen French Advocacy Centre Niagara

“The Kristen French CACN provides a safe place to help, heal, end child abuse for Niagara’s children and youth who have been physically abused, sexually abused, become the targets of internet luring, or were the unwilling witness of violence. As a registered charitable organization, the Centre serves all of Niagara’s 12 municipalities, helping children and families cope with the life altering impacts of child abuse.” – www.kristenfrenchcacn.org

DONATIONS – New or like new stuffed animals, snacks, juice boxes, coffee, water, hot chocolate

Community Care St. Catharines & Thorold

Programs range from food and shelter security to emergency services and support that lead to the independence clients strive to achieve.

DONATIONS – Non-perishable food items, gently used clothing, monetary donations, new toys for children; Donations needed all year round with a special need at Christmas.

Goodwill Industries Niagara, St Catharines

Mission Statement: “Goodwill provides work opportunities and skill development for people with barriers to employment or independence, and affordable housing for seniors.” – www.goodwillniagara.com

DONATIONS – Good, useable and clean clothing for men, women, children and babies. Monetary donations are also accepted at one of these six stores. Donations are also accepted before going over the scales at the Humberstone Landfill.

Bibles for Missions, St Catharines, Thrift Shop

Volunteer Gift Wrapper (The Arthritis Society)

For ages 14+. The Arthritis Society is looking for people to wrap gifts for shoppers at Fairview Mall, St. Catharines, ON. All proceeds support The Arthritis Society. Various shifts are available, and they will train.

Bell Ringer/Kettle Attendant (The Salvation Army)

For ages 16+. With Christmas coming, you would be helping the less fortunate in the local community. Monetary donations go to families, single mothers, the homeless, and children in need.

With over 30 years experience, Pelham Cares is a non-profit, volunteer supported organization that helps the residents of Pelham in their time of need.

Green ELFS Volunteers

Green ELFS (Ever Loving Family Support!) brings gently used gifts to kids in need in Niagara Region.

DONATIONS AND WAYS YOU CAN HELP – They need clean, working toys, clothes, non perishable foods, linens, bedding, furniture, and dishes. Volunteers are needed for their toy drive and food drive every year. Adopt a family through them for Christmas (by giving gently used items to them). You pick a family, wrap the gifts and deliver them to the family yourself.

Community Support Services of Niagara, St.Catharines

“Become a volunteer with Community Support Services of Niagara and contribute to your health and the health of your community. We have many volunteer opportunities available, so you too can contribute to a healthier community. Being a part of Community Support Services of Niagara is both fulfilling and rewarding for our volunteers.” – www.cssn.ca

HELP NEEDED – They need caring volunteers that will be matched with a client to provide visits in person or by phone for companionship. You will help to brighten their day and to check on their well-being. Many of their clients have no family or friends and spend their days alone. Christmas-time in particular can be difficult, so you can help by playing board games, help warm-up a meal, help with light household tasks, go for a walk, help write a letter or Christmas cards, help finish a knitting or sewing project, assist the client to run an errand or go grocery shopping, etc. Volunteers are linked with clients who have similar interests.
